overview

scaling design operations

The need to equip a diverse internal audience—including Fresh Graduates & Interns, Curious Non-Techies, UX Enthusiasts, and Team Collaborators—with essential Figma skills and UX principles to build a solid career foundation and drive organizational consistency.

  • Audience: Internal employees across various roles (technical and non-technical) looking to sharpen their design skills.

  • Goal: To transform a Figma beginner into a confident, work-ready design expert over two days of interactive, mentor-led modules. The program aimed to ensure attendees mastered the tools needed to produce stunning, high-fidelity designs and create interactive prototypes.

  • Deliverable: A comprehensive two-day, four-module virtual training experience with hands-on projects and expert feedback.

  • My Role: UX Designer / Training Architect / Design Operations Lead

challenge

inconsistent tooling & skill gaps

The widespread need to elevate design capability across the organization suffered from three major issues:

  1. Fragmented Tooling & Inconsistency: Design files were not centralized, leading to inconsistent outputs and component drift, where designers wasted time rebuilding common elements rather than utilizing reusable design components.

  2. Insufficient Foundational Skills: While many employees were UX enthusiasts or team collaborators, they lacked proficiency in the essential Figma skills needed for daily work, hindering their ability to build a solid foundation and fully adopt the centralized design system.

  3. Inefficient Hand-offs & Collaboration: Without mastering advanced techniques like Auto Layout, Variants, and high-fidelity prototyping, the ability to efficiently share files, receive feedback, and iterate quickly was hampered, slowing down team dynamics and project success.

solution

unified, action-oriented design skills (2-day bootcamp)

The solution was structured as a highly condensed, mentor-led bootcamp built around a core principle: Figma Basics -> Component Mastery -> Collaborative Expertise.

1. Information Architecture for Strategic Skill Acquisition

The curriculum was structured as a highly scannable, two-day, four-module experience to serve as a rapid upskilling pipeline for the organization's design talent.

2. Prioritizing the "Mastery-Application-Scale" (M-A-S) Framework
The central design challenge was translating tool instruction into actionable, applied skills. The curriculum required every module to trigger the M-A-S outcome:

  • Before (Ineffective): "I know Figma has Auto Layout."

  • After (M-A-S Focused UX):

    • MASTERY: Deep dive into Auto Layout with padding, spacing, and stacking order.

    • APPLICATION: Learn to create flexible layouts that adapt beautifully to different devices.

    • SCALE: Utilize Component Properties & Variants to create flexible, scalable design systems.

3. Training Visualization and Cognitive Efficiency

Visual elements and the mentor-led format were designed to reduce cognitive load and prevent skill atrophy:

  • Format: Mentor-led, interactive virtual training provided valuable feedback from industry professionals.

  • Modularity: Separating the content into four distinct, focused modules (e.g., Components, Auto Layout, Parallax Animation, Team Libraries) allowed attendees to absorb complex concepts sequentially.

  • Collaboration Techniques: Specific exercises focused on sharing files, using commenting, and exploring version history to foster teamwork essential in today's design landscape.

results &
impact

accelerated design maturity & talent upskilling

The adoption of the "Zero to Hero" bootcamp significantly improved the organization's focus, consistency, and design speed. This project successfully established a foundational program for Design Operations, transforming individual skill gaps into a scalable, high-impact talent development strategy.

This program not only empowered employees—including Fresh Graduates, Interns, and Collaborators—with work-ready Figma and UX skills but also directly contributed to the organization's move toward DesignOps maturity.
